Know whether ripening can continue after harvest
Iowa State University Extension explains the broad distinction between climacteric fruit and non-climacteric fruit. Climacteric fruit can continue ripening after harvest because its ripening process continues with increased ethylene production. Bananas, apples, pears, and avocados are among the common examples. Non-climacteric fruit does not become sweeter or more flavorful merely because it sits on the counter after harvest; strawberries are one familiar example.
This does not mean every climacteric fruit should sit out for days, or that every non-climacteric fruit belongs in the same storage condition. It gives you the first branch in the decision. If a banana or avocado is still firmer than the use you want, continued ripening can be useful. If a strawberry is disappointing when purchased, leaving it at room temperature is not a reliable strategy for creating post-harvest sweetness.

3 · Real decisions
Six situations where the planner changes the answer
Use room temperature while it is still firm. When it yields gently and reaches the texture you want, refrigeration can slow further change. The goal is not a fixed 2–5 day promise; the goal is to observe readiness.
Once the banana is ripe enough, refrigeration can slow further ripening. USDA SNAP-Ed notes that the peel may turn dark while the inside remains fresh, so peel color alone is not the verdict.
Do not force the European-pear model onto it. Utah State explains that Asian pears ripen on the tree and are characteristically crisp. Firmness can be part of the intended ripe texture.
Move the storage decision toward refrigeration when the goal is to slow further ripening. USDA SNAP-Ed explicitly notes that refrigerated apples ripen more slowly than apples kept at room temperature.
Do not expect counter storage to create post-harvest sweetness. Iowa State classifies strawberries among non-climacteric fruits. Focus on keeping the fruit in good condition and use the full strawberry guide for storage and washing decisions.
Switch lanes. Once fruit is cut, ordinary fresh-cut food handling matters more than the whole-fruit ripening plan. USDA FSIS advises prompt refrigeration of fresh-cut produce and running-water washing without soap or detergent.
4 · Ethylene
Use ripening proximity deliberately, not accidentally
Iowa State’s current fruit-storage guidance explains that climacteric fruits continue producing ethylene as they ripen. That is why a paper-bag technique can accelerate ripening for some fruits and why separating ethylene-producing fruit from ethylene-sensitive produce can sometimes help protect quality.
This is not permission to treat every fruit bowl like a controlled experiment. Temperature, fruit variety, maturity at purchase, bruising, and the condition of neighboring produce all matter. Use ethylene as a reasoning clue: if you want a climacteric fruit to continue ripening, room temperature and proximity to another ripe climacteric fruit can speed the process. If you want to preserve a sensitive item, separation can be useful.

Predict before using the tool
You have a firm avocado, a ripe banana, a crisp Asian pear, and strawberries that are already fully colored. Which items benefit from room-temperature ripening, which are better refrigerated now, and which fruit should not be left out in hopes of becoming sweeter?
Reveal one reasonable answer
The firm avocado can continue ripening at room temperature. The ripe banana can be refrigerated to slow further change. The Asian pear should not be judged by European-pear softness; crispness can be the intended ripe texture. The strawberries will not become sweeter after harvest, so counter “ripening” is not the useful plan.
